Children love to text. It’s a quick way to communicate with friends. And plenty of gadgets can send text messages. But which is right for your kids?
Youngsters at different ages have different needs. And texting tends to ramp up for teenagers. That can sock you in the wallet if you’re not careful. The right machine will help you stay on top of things.
Let’s cover children’s needs at all ages. That may mean starting young.
Toddlers
Parents may feel that toddlers are too young. I probably wouldn’t give a toddler a cell phone, either. But texting could be educational.
LeapFrog sells educational toys for young kids. One is called the Text & Learn ($22). This looks like an oversized smartphone. And it features a full keyboard.
It doesn’t actually send text messages. But kids can learn spelling through it. (Be sure they don’t use texting shorthand!) Your children see you texting. This toy may make them feel grown up.
Preteen
A real cell phone makes sense for preteens. That doesn’t mean they’ll be getting an expensive smartphone. Nor do you have to give them complete freedom. You can still control their use.
