| I do medical transcribing and have Word 2003. I received a letterhead (the sender also has Word 2003) to be downloaded and used on the statonery, but when I try to open the e-mail it says it was created by a newer version of Word, that it is a Word 2007 document and will not open. I tried to save it as a Word 2003 but the drop-down only had Word 2007. The sender tried sending it again but it came out the same way. This is very frustrating as it is an important document, and this is the only document where that has happened so far. Help, anybody! |

Does this file come with a docx or docm extension, or are extentions turned off on your computers so you can't see them?
In any event if it is a Word 2007 document you can use the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for 2007 Office to use it in your Word 2003. Xhi The Computer Whisperer Never start vast projects with half-vast ideas |

The extension is docx. I tried the Compatability Pack and it turned it into a read only document. I am so afraid it is going to affect other documents, then I will be sunk.

I realize that you may need 100% Microsoft Office compatibility, but have you considered loading OpenOffice.org just to handle document translation? You may lose document formatting and have to clean it up, but it may work better for you than your present setup.
All you need to be able to restore to the original looks (but possibly minus macros) would be a PDF or FAX of the original and the translated file through OO.o. It may be worth a try. Go-OO.org may be even better at translating that pesky Office 2007 document to a form which you can use in Office 2003.

If the person sending you the file created it him/her self, they are actually using Office 2007, not 2003. Otherwise, it would be impossible for the document to have the .docx extension. If the file was created by someone else, and the person sending it to you really does have Office 2003, then he/she must be using the compatibility pack in order to work with the file.
Your best bet is to get the person who created the file to save it in the older .doc file format, which they can do from Office 2007. They simply have to use the Save As option and choose the Office 97 - 2003 (.doc) option, then forward that file to you.
The latest version of OpenOffice does support the .docx file format, but with some limitations. You could use it to open the file, then save it in the .doc file format so that you can work with it in Office 2003. Or, you can quite fighting the inevetible and upgrade to Office 2007 now. Office 2010 will be out in the first half of next year and it also uses the Office Ribbon interface. Either learn to use that interface now, or fight through a steeper learning curve later. On the other hand, Office 2010 does in fact give you the option of disabling the ribbon and using a more traditional menu system if you prefer. However, at least you'll be fully compatible with the latest Office file versions. If your work documents are truely this important, the cost of both time and money to upgrade now should be well justified! |
