Back to square one. For some reason, my wmp or media center will not play dvds. I thought everything was fine a couple of weeks a ago, wmp in w7 home premium, played my first dvd from netflix, sent that one back, the next dvd didn't play, just made some whirling sounds, and that was about it.I thought (hoped) that the disc was defective, sent it back, new dvd arrived today. Same routine, whirling sounds, sputters and thats it. Tried with wmp and wmc. Curious why the first dvd was accepted (from netflix)and the last two dvds were not accepted? All 3 dvds were from netflix-so If that could be considered a contoll group, I should have the same outcome, but first dvd played on wmp from w7. Any insight, would be welcome have Star Wars: Eposide V: The Empire Strikes Back: Im old school, just waiting. Looks like I'll have to put the pop-corn on hold Thanks for your time. |

Do you have Auto Play enabled? Go to Start > Search and type in Auto Play. Check your settings.
If the above doesn't correct the problem what happens if you insert the DVD and click on Play in the Menu Bar and then DVD, VCD or CD audio?

Thanks for your time. I have auto play enabled, I also set, default settings to wmp (tried) set default to wmc (tried)same response. When I click play nothing, wmp and wmc don't acknowledge that there is a dvd inserted in the tray

With the DVD inserted, click on Play in the Menu Bar. Is DVD, VCD or CD audio available, or is it grayed out?

Do you have commercial DVD playing software other than Windows Media Center? The reason I am asking is that you may not have the codec to play DRM encrypted DVDs. Microsoft does not include the codecs for anything other than Microsoft encoded media. You can also find codecs on-line, but I would be hesitant to go just anyplace to get the codec. Make sure you check the McAfee Site Advisor or Web Of Trust ratings on any site before you download.

Hi Jeffery, See if THIS helps you with your problem with Windows Media Center.
Here is ANOTHER about Windows Media Center and DVDS.
Here is more INFORMATION for you on playing DVDS on your Windows Media Center without leaving the couch!!
You know more about this type of equipment than I do but just thought I would try to be of help to you as that stuff can get frustrating at times.

Back up to square one:
In Computer does the DVD drive show up correctly?
Have you gone to Device Manager to see if there are any problems with the DVD drive?
Will the DVD drive recognize a DVD at all? For instance a data DVD or a DVD program installation disc?
Since it worked two weeks ago the DVD drive could possibly have gone bad.

Go to Device Manager. Expand your DVD drive. R click and select Properties. The General Tab should tell you if it is working properly. While you're there check the Region. Should be 1 for the U.S. and Canada.
Check the Driver and see if it is provided by Microsoft. If so, you might need to get an updated driver from the Mfg. of the drive.
Again, will the DVD drive recognize another type of DVD?

CD's don't count. The CD part could be OK and the DVD bad. Try your upgrade DVD just to see if it will read a DVD. Just cancel out after it loads.

Did you try this?
In WMP at the top where you have, File View Play Tools Help, click on Play > DVD, VCD or CD audio, and see if you can manually make it play.
If you don't have the Menu Bar visible, R click in the area beside Library > Music > Artist, and place a check beside Show menu bar.
