In a recent FDA announcement, Edgewell Personal Care has come forward with news regarding its Banana Boat Hair & Scalp Sunscreen Spray SPF 30. Previously, three UPCs were flagged, but one additional lot has now been included due to high levels of benzene, which is a potential cancer risk.

Read on to learn about a previous product recall that’s been expanded to include a new lot code in 2023.

Which Banana Boat products are being taken off the shelves?

Benzene, a propellant that helps products like sunscreen achieve a finer, more uniform spray, has been shown to cause cancer in humans and animals when exposed for extended periods. Many products have been recalled because of the benzene they contain, and that list just got a little longer.

The FDA announced an expanded voluntary recall by Edgewell Personal Care regarding some of its Banana Boat sunscreen. Three Banana Boat Hair & Scalp Sunscreen Sprays were recalled last summer. Now, a fourth joins them. It’s lot code 20301CF.

According to the FDA, a review found that some product samples contained trace levels of benzene. While benzene is not an ingredient in any Banana Boat products, the evaluation showed that unexpected levels of benzene came from the propellant that sprays the product out of the can.

All four recalled products are listed here:

  • Banana Boat Hair & Scalp Spray SPF 30, lot code 20016AF.
  • Banana Boat Hair & Scalp Spray SPF 30, lot code 20084BF.
  • Banana Boat Hair & Scalp Spray SPF 30, lot code 21139AF.
  • Banana Boat Hair & Scalp Spray SPF 30, lot code 20301CF.

NOTE: Lot codes are located on the bottom of the can. If you have one of the recalled items, stop using it ASAP.

No other batches of Hair & Scalp (either before or after these batch codes) and no other Banana Boat products are being recalled and may continue to be used safely and as intended.
