Google Street View gives woman a heartwarming blast from the past

Google Street View is an awesome tool, there’s no denying that. You can use it to peek around a neighborhood you’re thinking of moving to or even find the exact building front where your friends said they’d meet you.
In so many ways, it’s helped to make getting lost a thing of the past. But, the same cameras that record those helpful images can capture surprising and heartwarming photos too.
Take this woman who got an emotional blast from the past, thanks to Google Street View.
And there she was…
A Florida resident received a nostalgic surprise when she looked up her late mother’s old address on Google Earth.
Denise Underhill, who used to live in Tamworth, Staffordshire in the U.K., was stunned when she spotted her mother, who passed away 18 months ago, in one of Google’s Street View images.
The Tamworth Herald reports that Denise had an impulsive desire to talk to her late mom but since that’s impossible she decided to look up their old home in Google Earth instead.
And what she glimpsed was even better than what she hoped for. Aside from the house, Google Street View captured an image of her mom, dressed casually in blue jeans and a floral shirt, watering her front garden like she always did.
It’s the perfect nostalgic moment frozen in time.
Biggest surprise ever
“As I went about my housework, I somehow instantaneously had the impulse to call my mother, but realized that it was completely out of the question,” Underhill told the Tamworth Herald. “I decided to Google Earth my mother’s home to see how it looked, considering … she had passed away in 2015 and the property had been sold.”
As Denise explored Google Earth’s virtual roads, she immediately spotted her mother’s house by recognizing the tall silver birch tree that stands in the yard. She was understandably thrilled and astounded by the chance encounter.
“I got the biggest surprise ever! I just couldn’t believe it,” she told the Herald. “At the foot of the driveway was my mother. She was watering the garden, just as she always did. I was absolutely astounded – it made my day.”
She then waxed philosophical about the surprise. “You never know what photos are being taken but they really do last a lifetime. I think someone wanted me to see this.”
So the next time you search for your old stomping grounds in Google Earth, look around in Google Street View for a bit, there could be a heartwarming surprise waiting for you.

Deepfake video technology is the next big thing in fake news

Fake news is one of the scourges of our increasingly connected world. With billions having instant access to social media sites and the web, misinformation can spread quickly like wildfire. To discern what’s bogus from real, we typically rely on concrete proof, like a video, for example, to prove that something was actually said or done.
