Blast from the past

The classic puzzle game Minesweeper is now on Netflix. This colorful, reimagined version features an ocean-like setting where you find underwater mines in locations around the world. No in-game ads, no in-app purchases and no extra cost to play.

Play on, player

Summer is playtime. I wrangled up a few great beach or outdoor lawn games for hosting, travel or just weekend fun.

  • Keep it classic: This bocce ball set is 19% off and comes with its own carrying case.
  • Get the kids off their screens: This game set is a party in a box for the younger members of your summering crew, with four games in one. Select the size for kids ages 3 to 7 or 5 to 10.
  • Light up the night: A lightweight, light-up flying disc is good for parties that go past sunset, which is pretty late these days! Woo, it’s 15% off.
  • Backyard bowling: An outdoor (or indoor, for rainy days) bowling set for 22% off. Strike!
  • Tabletop playing: Give your feet a rest from the other games and play a hook-and-ring game (15% off).
  • Create your own course: Most putting games are pricey, but this set of two putting cups is a steal on sale for $8.99. Get a bunch and create your own 18.

Get a little space: Virtual desktops on Windows let you keep work, play, vacation planning and whatever else separate. Hit Windows key + Ctrl + D to create a new virtual desktop. Use Windows key + Ctrl + the left or right arrows to move between your desktops. When you’re done, hit Windows key + Ctrl + F4 to close your current virtual desktop.

The truth about cell phone radiation

Open/download audio

The cell phone industry says phone radiation is harmless, but I prefer to play it safe. Here’s how.

Taylor Swift’s password is Iknewyouweretroublewhenyouloggedin: Swift Alert (iPhone and Android) is a Swiftie’s favorite app. It calculates when a concert starts in your timezone so you know when to tune into the livestream. It also notifies you when Taylor’s biggest hits are about to play, along with any surprises on stage.

DIY Projector

Sometimes, it’s just too hot to go outside and play. Why not try this DIY smartphone projector? You can enjoy time with the kids while staying cool.

Keep your pets cool

Your furry family members are feeling the summer heat, too. I found some sweet deals to cool down your pup or cat.

  • Air Bud: An elevated dog bed is easier on their joints and a cooler perch because of airflow. Snag this Amazon Basics bed for 27% off.
  • Jump in anytime: Take this foldable dog pool anywhere. Smaller sizes are up to 37% off right now. My girl, Abby, loves to swim.
  • Splish-splash: Splash pads are for dogs, too. This 67-inch pad is a steal at $19.98. Fine, the kids can play on it, too.
  • Cool cats (and dogs): Washable and portable, a cooling mat for pets can keep them comfy in the car, on the patio or even in the living room. Get it on sale now for $9.99.
  • App-paws for safety: Pets’ paws can burn on hot surfaces. Protect their little tootsies with these dog booties, now 33% off.

You sweep me off my feet: The classic puzzle game Minesweeper is now on Netflix. This colorful, reimagined version features an ocean-like setting where you find underwater mines in locations around the world. No in-game ads, no in-app purchases and no extra cost to play. Check out the trailer here.

No more free web browsers: Most lack the essential security businesses need, and app integration generally stinks. Enter the new genre of enterprise browsers (paywall link), built to be secure and productive. You’ll have to pay to play, of course. If you have a biz, it’s something to consider. It might even reduce your cyber-insurance costs.

Baby- or snoop-proof your iPad: Activate Guided Access. Just triple-click the home button once you’re in the app you wish to lock, then triple-click again to exit and enter your passcode. Now, your kid can play a game or your pal can scroll photos — and nothing else.

Nighty-night: Like dozing off to music or videos on your iPhone? There’s a hidden setting in the Clock app to stop media playback at a certain time. Open Clock, select Timers tab and tap When Timer Ends. Next, scroll down, select Stop Playing and tap Set. Choose how long you want your media to play, and then press Start

YouTube special letter tricks: Press M to mute or unmute a video, K to pause or play a video, and F to enter or exit full-screen mode.

Listen on your stereo

Pam in Fort Lauderdale wrote to me to ask if there’s a cheap, easy way for her to play music from her phone on her home stereo.

📻 Heck yes, there are, Pam. Each one works a little differently. Follow the included instructions and you’ll be rockin’ in no time.

  • Super affordable: Connect this receiver ($23.99) to your stereo’s audio port, give it some juice via a USB cable, and then push one button to pair it with your phone. Easy-peasy.
  • Pricer but better sound: Audiophiles, this one is for you. A Wi-Fi connection will give you better sound than a Bluetooth option. The WiiM Mini audio player ($89) is worth the money.
  • Get smart: Some Echo models, like this refurbished 4th-gen Echo Dot (34% off, $58.99), can connect to your stereo with a 3.5mm aux cable. That’s pretty sweet.

 Last-minute Father’s Day gifts

🫶 Don’t play heart to get: I make a “hand heart” sign by touching my thumbs and curving the rest of my fingers into a “C” shape. Gen Z says nope, that’s the old way. The new way? Touch your middle and index fingers together. Having trouble picturing? Here it is in action.

Play as you go: Uber wants to make your ride more fun. Hidden code in Uber’s latest iPhone app update hints at mini-games coming soon with data or an internet connection required. Why? It’s another way to serve you ads, of course.

Goodnight, moon: Have an Echo? Alexa can help you drift off to sleep. Say something like, “Alexa, play rain sounds” (or whatever your favorite soothing sounds are, whether it’s waves or ambient noise), then say, “Alexa, set a sleep timer for one hour.” That way, the audio will shut off once you’re asleep.

Play to pay: At 22, Kyasia Watson is raking in over $100,000 a year from Roblox. Nope, she’s not streaming; she’s a digital fashion designer who collabs with big brands to craft in-game items, clothes and accessories for player avatars. Roblox has 77 million daily active users, btw. Cha‑ching!

🔍 App traps: Over 90 apps with a combined 5.5 million downloads were spotted hiding malware in the Google Play Store. At the top of the list are PDF Reader & File Manager and QR Reader & File Manager, both packing the Anatsa banking Trojan that steals financial info. If you downloaded a compromised app, do a factory reset on your phone ASAP.
