Chrome browser vulnerability under attack – Update now

Google’s Chrome browser is among the most popular out there, so it’s no surprise that it is a frequent target for hackers. A security flaw was found in the latest version of Chrome, which was recently released. We have the latest from Google and what you can do to avoid this exploit.

What we know

Chrome 89 was announced on March 2 and with it came a list of 47 security fixes. Among them was a zero-day flaw discovered by a member of Microsoft Browser Vulnerability Research.

It can take days, months or even years before a developer becomes aware of a vulnerability. In this case, it took nearly a month. The vulnerability, labeled CVE-2021-21166, has a “High” rating as a security flaw.

Google describes it as an “Object lifecycle issue in audio” but gave no information beyond that. The report stated that “Access to bug details and links may be kept restricted until a majority of users are updated with a fix.” So we may know more about this later.
