None of us ever want to think about what we would do in an emergency. In fact, the mere thought of how we would react and what would happen in a crisis is disturbing. But while the last thing we want to consider is the possibility of something bad happening, unfortunately that is a bit detached from reality. Bad things do happen, which is why at the very least it makes sense to be prepared. From an early age we all learn to dial 9-1-1 for emergency services, but with smartphones there are other options, too. The truth is as long as you have your phone with you, help is never that far away.

bSafe

One of the better personal safety apps available is bSafe, which is free for both iOS and Android. It allows you to create a personal security network, which will provide a variety of safety features. With bSafe, your network of friends will be able to see your location on a map, while you will have the opportunity to send an alarm signal when you are in danger. The app will provide a live video stream of what is going on around you, and everything will be recorded in case you need evidence for police.Another great feature is that bSafe can be activated by voice if you are unable to reach your phone, and it will also fake a phone call if you need that kind of assistance. If there is a downside to the app, it is that any friends and family you designate as guardians will also need to download bSafe and create a profile. But if they do that, this app is one of the best in terms of safety features, of which there are many.Download: Apple | Android

Life360 Family & Friend Locator

If you are looking for an app that will let you know where loved ones are, this is a great choice. It lets you set up Place Alerts that will inform you whenever someone gets to a specific location, while also providing the chance to check on any family member’s location. The free version of the app allows you to assign two places for alerts and see the location history for two days. There are multiple paid versions that provide even more, like the real-time location of friends and family on a private map and the ability to share photos or text messages via a secure private chat. You will also be able to see past location history for people in your circle and even receive information after each time you drive and the app can help you track a lost or stolen phone. It is a pleasant app to look at, and while maybe not packed with features still provides enough for many people’s needs.Download: Apple | Android

Companion: Personal Safety (Apple)

When it comes to personal safety, few would care more about you than your family and friends. That’s the approach Companion takes, letting them essentially be your security team. For this app, you choose people who you want to be your companions before you start your trip. Once on the way, you can edit your trip time and even add a destination. From there your companions will be able to track your progress, chat with you on the go and even get live updates on your status. If things go awry, the app will quickly contact your companions or the proper authorities before anything bad happens.A free app, it is exceptionally helpful and easy to use.Download: Apple
